Peridot is one of the few gems that occurs in only one colour - its iron content sets the saturation. Fine large gemstones from Pakistan's Sapat mine match the deepest historical Egyptian material.
Olivine has been identified in pallasite meteorites, on Mars and in lunar samples - making peridot a literal extraterrestrial gem.
Mined on Egypt's Zabargad island for over 3,500 years; thought by Cleopatra's court to be 'evening emerald'.
